What is Composting?
Composting is a very effective way to reduce food wastage. Home composting can potentially divert up to 150 kg of food waste per household per year from local collection authorities, according to the FAO.
Compost is a type of fertilizer that uses decayed organic matter to help plants grow.
The best thing about composting is that it can be done all year, no excuses!
What Materials Do I Need?
Materials needed for composting | Examples |
Natural Green Materials (25-50% of your compost heap) | Grass, weeds, fruit and vegetables (Including Potato skins, orange peel, banana skin etc..) |
Woody brown Materials | Dead leaves, wood chippings, ripped-up/ shredded paper and cardboard |
Compost bin (Optional) | If you are using a compost bin, add a layer of soil to the bottom of your compost bin *A Compost bin is only necessary if you do not have a garden or area within your home that has a soil base* |
Where Should I Put My Compost?
Ensure the compost/compost bin is placed somewhere in the shade or light shade. I recommend in a corner of your garden, if possible.

This is important as the bacteria and fungi function more optimally within cooler conditions, especially in the peak of summer.
The same thing goes with having a good mix of both green and brown materials, as this ensures that bacteria and fungi can break down the compost.
Is that it?
I know what you’re thinking. Is that It?
Yes, that’s all you need to do! Just ensure you keep mixing your compost, every 4 to 6 weeks. This helps with air circulation, allowing for optimal degradation of your waste.
This will take between 6 months – 2 years, for your compost to biodegrade. Matured compost will look dark brown with a woody, damp smell.
This process is never truly complete as you’ll always be producing food waste, just keep adding to your compost heap.
